A PROMISING FUTURE FOR THE ITALIAN PHOTOVOLTAIC SECTOR
With an installed photovoltaic power of almost 760 MW, of which 342 MW only in 2009,
Italy
aims to become a “1 GW country” by 2010.
The data summary from December 2009 published by GSE, the managing authority of the energetic services, shows a distinct growth in Italy in the number of photovoltaic stations and in generated power.
At the end of 2008 Italy, with 338 MW, shared third place in the international ranking on installed power together with the United States. Even if a final balance of the situation of the international photovoltaic sector in 2009 is still to draw Italy, with 342 MW, is among the best in the world.
The successful result is mainly due to the introduction of the New Feed-In tariff in 2007, which has encouraged investments in the photovoltaic market.
Moreover, considering both the old and the New Feed-In Tariff policy, from the 1st of January 2006 to the 31 of December 2009 the total number of the installed plants in Italy is 60.337 with a power of 759,909 MW, which puts Italy in the race to become a 1 GW country.
At the national level the Power stations are spread out principally in the north of Italy and the main regions are Lombardy (9.278 plants with a total of 94 MW), Piedmont (5.644/71MW) and Emilia Romagna (4.871/60 MW), while Lazio holds primacy in the Centre (3.700 plants/41 MW) and Apulia in the South (4.574/103MW).
Lombardy also has the highest number of class 5 plants (power stations generating over 1 MW) with 6 entities.
The perspectives for the future are promising. In the next 6 years, Italy expects a further yearly increase of between 12 and 30% in the production and installation of photovoltaic power stations, also in case of a deduction in the future Feed-In tariff.
